Amy Spitalnick, the 2008-2009 Dutko Fellow, will be working at J Street beginning this fall. J Street (www.jstreet.org) is a new advocacy organization that promotes “meaningful American leadership to end the Arab-Israeli and Palestinian-Israel conflicts peacefully and diplomatically”; Amy will be working on media and communications. Since graduation, before beginning her Dutko Fellowship, Amy has been serving as Deputy Communications Director on the Dennis Shulman for Congress (www.shulmanforcongress.com) campaign in northern New Jersey. Shulman, a blind psychologist and rabbi, recently won the Democratic nomination in New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District to take on Republican incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett.
At Tufts, Amy double majored in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies, and minored in Communications & Media Studies. She spent her junior year studying abroad in Jerusalem, and served as President of Tufts Hillel (www.tuftshillel.org) and as Senior Intern in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. In 2005, Amy worked on Congressman Anthony Weiner’s New York City mayoral campaign; she also was a 2006 Media Fellow at The Israel Project and an intern at Mary Fifield Associates.
While I have always been a political junkie, I entered Tufts unsure as to how I wanted this passion to manifest itself in a career. My four years at Tufts have allowed me to not only take this passion and translate it into tangible experiences, but also understand and act on my broader goal of utilizing public policy as a means of effective social change. Even though I have yet to officially begin my fellowship, Deb and the rest of the Dutko family have already demonstrated just how invaluable they will be in pursuing this goal. I’m looking forward to heading down to DC after the campaign to officially begin my Dutko experience!
