Chadwick Matlin is currently one of the 2007-2008 Dutko Fellows and is working at Slate Magazine. Chadwick is a wirter for Trailhead, Slate Magazine's, presidential politics blog. He writes for tens of thousands of readers a day on issues ranging from Barack Obama's technology policy to Rudy Giuliani's campaign strategy. Independently, Chadwick also is the co-founder of Map the Candidates--, a political web tool that tracks where the presidential candidates have spent the most time campaigning. Map the Candidates is currently housed at Slate.

At Tufts, Chadwick majored in anthropology and concentrated in media and cultural studies. While there he worked at the local National Public Radio affiliate, co-produced a documentary on illegal immigrants' access to education, and taught a class on how the new era of technological change affects media's economic outlook. Chadwick has also served as an associate producer for a news documentary for The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and worked at ABC News.

If someone would have sat me down during my freshman year of college and told me that my first job out of college would entail writing about the 2008 presidential race, I would have laughed. It seemed implausible for a fresh-faced graduate to be shaping the debate. But that's exactly what the Dutko Fellowship has allowed me to do. I write about presidential politics for Slate Magazine--a dream job for any recent graduate. My writing informs tens of thousands of people every day about the daily grind of presidential politics, which allows me to participate in the fourth estate on a grander stage than I could have ever imagined. Such a large and influential audience would not have been possible without the support and contacts that the Dutko Fellowship provided.

My classes at Tufts University first piqued my interest in media. While there I worked at the local National Public Radio affiliate, coproduced a documentary on immigrants' access to education, and taught a class on media's changing economy in an era of technological change. Utilizing connections I made at Tufts, I cofounded MaptheCandidates.com, a tool that tracks where the presidential candidates have been campaigning. The Dutko Fellowship allowed me to harness all of that experience and channel it into my political reporting in Washington.
