Kathleen Harrington, the new senior vice president at Dutko Worldwide, says she was a close friend to a founding partner of the group who died in 1999. Dan Dutko, a Democratic fundraiser and a member of the Democratic National Committee, died at age 54 of head injuries in a mountain-biking accident in Aspen, Colo. "As Dan Dutko's friend, I know that his true passion in this business was encouraging people at all levels to take an idea and run with it; that he had their back and would give them his insight and support to turn creative ideas into action," Harrington says. Dutko also helped Harrington start the U.S. Korea Foundation. "Coming to Dutko at this exciting point in my career, I can tell you that that spirit still pervades and sets this firm apart," she says.

Harrington, a self-described Democrat, has previously served as chief of staff for the Broadcasting Board of Governors and as a senior adviser in the State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs under President Clinton. She's also a former legislative aide for Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn. Harrington, 49, founded a business consulting firm and was executive director of the RFK Memorial. For Dutko Worldwide, she will largely work in the firm's global division but also help out in its federal practice.

A mother of two, Harrington enjoys sports and has a passion for the Boston Red Sox. She has coached her children's soccer teams and says she has been one of the few female Little League coaches in Northwest Washington. Harrington also loves the ocean, enjoys reading, and follows issues related to women and girls around the world. What's her most important life lesson? People should pursue their dreams even if they fail.
