How To Make Your Warehouse Environment More Efficient

The purpose of a warehouse is production, with a major focus on processes being smooth and efficient. Without the proper equipment and set-up, employees aren’t equipped to do their jobs well, which decreases productivity and increases the likelihood of injuries. To ensure your warehouse is operating safely and effectively, make sure you have these common, helpful items readily available.

Movable Carts

To reduce back strain and assist with a variety of loads, movable carts are essential. In a warehouse environment, the carts should have heavy duty swivel caster wheels to withstand the weight of any load placed on it without breaking. Large wheels also help if your carts need to roll over cords or cables in the warehouse area.

Personal Protective Gear

Anyone in the warehouse should have the proper gear to protect themselves from injury. These items include steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety goggles and gloves. If breathing masks are required, make sure each employee is properly fitted. For areas with chemicals involved, each employee needs additional protection to avoid chemical burns. Employee training needs to include how to lift things from the knees to avoid back strains.

Correct Dock Equipment

Because there are so many moving parts and areas in the dock, having the right equipment is necessary for the protection of your employees. Having items in places, such as dock bumpers, yard rails, truck restraints and wheel chocks, will allow efficiency and speed in this dangerous part of the operation.

Conveyors

Conveyors can move materials from one end of a warehouse to another without human assistance. There are many different types of conveyors and they can be expensive, but the benefits typically outweigh the cost. Conveyors allow processes to be automated, improve picking and packing speeds and simplify sorting. Use them in the heaviest flow areas of your production line to see the highest benefits.

Labels

Without the use of labels and signs, a warehouse would be chaos. Labels are necessary for items, shipping, locations and safety.

Lifting Equipment

Warehouses are tall and the use of lifting equipment is essential to properly store products on shelving units. Your lifting equipment needs to be maintained well to avoid unstable lifts from dropping or damaging items. Some types of lifting equipment you may need include forklifts, pallet jacks, service carts and cranes.

The availability of equipment in your warehouse will improve your process flow tremendously while protecting your employees. When chosen well, even the high ticket equipment costs provide your business with greater returns in the long run.
