    Is a Distribution Business Profitable?

People love to buy stuff. So whether it’s items such as skin creams, dietary supplements, or even vegan products, there’s always a demand for raw materials of any sort. One business that excels in providing such materials to prospective customers is distributors.

Before jumping into the distribution game, though, it helps to determine if such a venture will be profitable. We’ll dig a little into answering this question, defining what distribution is and what qualities are needed to succeed in this field.

What is distribution, and how do you make money by distributing?

Many businesses across the United States distribute a variety of products throughout the calendar year. These businesses distribute a wide-ranging selection of items such as dietary supplements, probiotics, skin creams, vegan products, gummies, beverages, and video gaming systems, delivering them to clients across the United States. Distribution occurs when a company buys noncompeting products or product lines and sells them directly to customers. This often involves a distributor purchasing products at a lower price from the manufacturer and then selling them at a nominal cost. As mentioned before, this can include any item ranging from nutritional manufacturing to alcoholic beverages.

Becoming a distributor has better benefits in the long run as compared to being a retailer. This relates to being able to sell in larger quantities. As a distributor, when you sell in bulk, you stand a better chance of making money. As you purchase items at the lowest price and sell them at a slightly higher price, you can make higher profits as a distributor. This prevents you from having to produce your own products. Every step of the way, you stand to make more money, no matter the type of product you’re selling. So, whether it’s multivitamins, alcoholic beverages (brandy, wine, beer), or heck, even gallons of mayonnaise, you stand to reap the financial benefits of being a distributor.

Why is distributing better than retailing?

When you’re a retailer, your overall goal is to appeal to a sizeable group of customers. For example, if you’re running a local grocery store, you need customers to purchase a wide variety of items. This might include dietary supplements, probiotics, skin creams, vegan products, and gummies. Or, maybe you’re a liquor store that offers a wide variety of alcoholic beverages such as brandy, wine, and beer. Whatever the circumstance, your fulfillment service involves maximizing your reach amongst your clientele every step of the way.

As a distributor, this isn’t as much of a concern. You aren’t concerned about the number of companies that you supply to. The quality of your contracts is what matters to you the most. For example, if you’re an alcoholic beverage distributor, you want to mainly focus on the quality of the product you’re providing. You want to grow your reputation as the distributor of the highest quality beverages such as brandy, wine, and beer. Being a quality supplier to the global market and locally in the United States will help your brand grow even more. This will help the quality of your contracts as a distributor.

You also have the benefit of building client relationships easily, rather than if you are a retailer. These clients will recognize your vast fulfillment service, your superb packaging services, the companies competitive pricing, product success, and years of experience from their personal experience with you. Once other potential clients see this working relationship that you’ve built over the years, your distribution will grow even more vastly across the global market. The same can’t be said as a retailer.

What are the skills a distributor needs to have?

As a distributor, you must have a few qualities. First, you must know how to negotiate. When you purchase a product at a lower price than the average wholesale pricing, this involves negotiating. For example, you want to ultimately be the best wholesaler or distributor of alcoholic beverages across the United States. This involves a certain “gift of the gab.” Next, you’ll need an eye for marketing. If you don’t have this skill, hire the best marketing firm that you can. They will help you to expand your reach to whoever needs to learn about your business.
